Chris Staples – Golden Age

August 20, 2016 § Leave a comment

Chris Staples has been on heavy rotation here lately. A month ago I fell in love with the first outtake Relatively Permanent from his new album Golden Age. That little tune is still one of my favourite songs of the year and I also bought the download of the earlier album, which turned out to be brilliant. The new album came out yesterday 19th of August on Barsuk Records . I haven’t listened to the whole thing yet, but I will buy a vinyl as soon as possible. However, there’s a new video for the title track Golden Age that I haven’t posted yet. The song is almost as good Relatively Permanent and somehow this video with renaissance costumes made me think of Gilmore Girls. So what’s not to love. I admit that I might be waiting too hard for the forthcoming Gilmore Girls comeback, because even such a far-fetched thing reminds me about that show.

And here’s that gorgeous Relatively Permanent as well.

Big Shoals – Hard Lessons

I’m still way behind with these blog writings. Here’s an album that I’ve been enjoying all summer long. It’s the new and excellent Big Shoals album Hard Lessons. Big Shoals are from Gainesville, Florida and have created a pretty convincing americana album. Some of it is highly entertaining and some of it is very moving. Here’s an example from both categories. Union Son and You Ain’t Nothing Like The Girls Back Home. You can guess which one falls into which category. Obviously most songs fall into both categories. Union Son features mr. Todd Beene from the Glossary fame on pedal steel. Hard Lessons came out July 15th and can be bought from their website.

Austin Lucas – Wrong Side of the Dream (video)

I wrote about the greatness of the new Austin Lucas album a few days ago. A revisit is already in order, because a new music video just surfaced. This is for one of the best songs on the album, Wrong Side of the Dream that features Lydia Loveless on co-vocals. This is also a co-write with another great songwriter Jodi James. The album Between the Moon and the Midwest is now out on Last Chance / At The Helm Records.

Turner Cody – Hiding in Plain Sight

Turner Cody is a New York-based songwriter and he just released a new album Hiding in Plain Sight. During the recent years, I’ve been very fond of the Turner Cody songbook. Especially his last two albums The Last of the Big Time Spenders and Plans and Schemes have spent a lot of time in my head and heart. The song I Know How I Feel About You is something that I hold very dear. One of my biggest song addictions of the past couple years. That’s only the brightest diamond though. There’s a lot of treasures in that songbook. All kinds of people from Reed to Richman comes to mind occasionally, but every song is still very much signature Turner Cody. Why this beautiful man isn’t world famous is one of life’s greater mysteries.

The new one Hiding in Plain Sight is another great addition to this song catalog. It’s only out on iTunes and Spotify (at least at the moment). Here are a couple of early favourites from the new album.

And here is I Know How I Feel About You from The Last Of the Big Time Spenders. It’s a fairly simple idea, but it’s such a lovely song. This song is a friend to me and life is better with this song and Turner Cody on it.

And here’s a few more from Mr. Turner Cody.

Tuomo & Markus – Dead Circles

Finnish soul wizard Tuomo Prättälä and americana/folk singer-songwriter Markus Nordenstreng joined forces, headed to Tuczon, Arizona and made an album with people like John Stirratt, John Convertino, Joey Burns, Jakob Valenzuela, Pat Sansone, and Gary Louris. That’s quite an all-star cast and I’m sorry for entering into this dreadful namedropping state. This namedropping of people I admire is making even me exhausted, but thankfully I can soothe my soul in the arms of a rather amazing record. It’s the music that counts and the fact that this features members of Wilco, Calexico, Autumn Defense and The Jayhawks will open a door or two, but the doorman still wouldn’t let them in, if the music itself was uninspiring and didn’t hold any value. Nothing to worry about the quality of the songs though. Everything works beautifully and the album Dead Circles contains some of the finest material these fine gentlemen have written over the years. Vanity Blinds is by far my favourite moment on this gorgeous album. Starts as a very classic Nordenstreng song that I’ve been enjoying since late nineties and rises to new heights with the gorgeous arrangements and beautiful instrumentation. A real work of art. The whole album is for the most part. Maybe a song or two feel a bit indifferent after a few spins, but that might be just me being an ignorant twat.

The album Dead Circles is out now on Grandpop Records. I highly recommend the beautiful gatefold vinyl (includes CD). There’s a couple of extra tracks too. So it’s not only the usual it looks and sounds better thing. You’ll get a little bit of extra by purchasing the vinyl.

Here’s the new music video for the song All Blue. I hope it’s perfectly ok to share this. It wasn’t on their website, but I found this from the director Paola Suhonen’s youtube and it was on their Facebook too. I’ll remove it asap, if there’s an issue.

This album that was produced by Aaron Goldstein will come out October 7th on Wroxton Recordings. There’s currently a pledge campaign going on to support the release. So click this link, in case you want to pre-order a copy of this (most likely) great album. There’s also a small Finnish connection.
