Another quick round up of early 2021 favorites. Kicking this off in Montreal, Canada with classic country gold from singer-songwriter Bobby Dove. Hopeless Romantic has been my favorite album during the past week and I also purchased a digital copy on Bandcamp day. Such a special record and I love it to bits. Here’s a couple of great examples from the album.

Next some California country from Lowstar Rodeo. This is a solo project by Kevin Carducci from The Easy Leaves. I’m not actually familiar with the band and I think just stumbled upon this when I did my weekly bandcamp new releases search routine. I instantly liked it and the feeling has only grown stronger during the last few weeks and therefore I also picked this one on Bandcamp day. My own favorite song is Toward the Light, which is one of the best pandemic songs I’ve heard.

This one by singer-songwriter and upright bassist Melissa Carper isn’t out before next week, but after hearing the three advance singles, I’m fully convinced that Daddy’s Country Gold will be one of my favorite albums of the year. Just perfect timeless country gold. Here’s a couple of these gorgeous singles (Bandcamp didn’t have playable songs, but you can pre-order it there)

Last station on this roundabout is Louisiana. Singer-songwriter Quinn Pilgrim’s great new album Jericho Dream came out on the 22nd of January on Partially Sealed Records. It’s neither on the Partially Sealed Records Bandcamp or Quinn’s personal Bandcamp, but you’ll find it from the streaming services. My own favorite is Helpless One that gives some Townes vibes. Excellent record as a whole too and definitely a name to keep an eye on.

A blog post that is not a playlist. Who would have thought. Well it might be just a one-off and there are hardly any words, but anyway, I wanted to highlight a few releases that might not be that high profile in the grand scheme of things, but mean the world to me. Kicking things off in Montreal, Quebec with Isaac Vallentin’s gorgeous third album “…” that came out on the 3rd of February. Here’s the music video for Winter Song along with my own favourite, almost ten minutes long The Ballad of Nunangat that honour the lives and voices of Indigenous Canadians.

Moving on to Bristol, UK for the brand new Clara Mann EP Consolations that came out last week on Sad Club Records. I pretty much came a fan of singer-songwriter Clara Mann during my first spin of her debut single I Didn’t Know You Were Leaving Today last November. I instantly loved it and I’ve felt the same way about every Clara Mann I’ve heard to date.

Back in Canada for another treasure from the February 26 release vault. Former Harlan Pepper Dan Edmonds released a new charming solo album Good Fortune Assembly. The song The Morning is just pure gold. Dan Edmonds, Luka Kuplowsky and Caitlin Woelfle-O’Brien create some magic together there and the music video is also excellent.

Let’s wrap this small blog entry in Los Angeles, California with the sweetest music video I know. It’s the ending song Love Me When I Go To Sleep from the new Steady Holiday album Take The Corners Gently. Such a lovely and heartfelt video. I love it wholeheartedly. Goes without saying that the album is also excellent.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #118

January 10, 2021 § Leave a comment

Another week, another new music weekly.

Another year too. It does seem that breaks are bad, because I really struggled to find the motivation and energy to start again. Maybe I’ll get the hang of this soon, because I do want to continue through this 20th anniversary year. I did this first one rather quickly, so I’m sure I missed a ton of releases. I also trusted my memory far too much, because I didn’t take any notes through the break and sort of thought that I will remember what came out. There’s at least some late December album releases that I couldn’t for the life of me remember anymore. I’ll include them later, if my memory gets better but I doubt it. I think one that I meant to listen had something to do with Dylan Rodrigue. It wasn’t his, but maybe he played on it or just shared it on social media. Not the Izaak Opatz one. I did cover that. Anyway, here’s the new playlist. It features the new January 8 releases plus some stuff from the earlier weeks.

The big new album releases came from Aaron Frazer, Steve Earle and Darci Phenix. In fact, those are only new albums on the list. Besides them, we got some fantastic new singles this week from Clara Baker, The Weather Station, Dillon Warnek and Sun June. Some earlier personal favorites on the list are the singles from Dylan Rodrigue, Heather Valley (Molina cover), Libby DeCamp and Sie Sie Benhoff. But as usual, I might as well namedrop them all.

The Finnish highlight of the past weeks is Kyyhky by Marian Valinta. It’s a song that I loved madly in the early 00s and apparently I still do. One that always hits the core of my heart. Other Finnish treasures this week are the singles from Hot Heros and Janne Laurila, Icons of Elegance and Mama Longhorn.

Anyway, that is all for this first week. Hopefully I’ll do a better job next week. Now some grocery shopping, dinner and back to NFL playoffs. Love from a distance.

Another week, another new music weekly.

I’m bit early and do this one rather quickly, because I need to work on the album of the year list for the rest of the weekend. I might add something here later, because I didn’t do as thorough research as normally and probably stumble upon something I really like later during the weekend.

The year is soon coming to an end, but there’s still some big new album releases led by new collaboration album by Kacy & Clayton and Marlon Williams. Other big album releases came from Duff Thompson, Izaak Opatz (gorgeous pop-country covers), Toby Goodshank (I think this was on Bandcamp last week, but now streaming too), Zeb Zaitz, James Steinle, Desolation Horse, M. Ward, Mike Viola, Guided By Voices, Sturgill Simpson. There’s also EPs from Oly and Christopher Gold and Emma Swift’s awesome Bob Dylan cover album is now on Spotify too. I think you don’t need me to find the Taylor Swift album (which is probably really good) or the album by that guy who once covered her songs.

From Finland we have a new single from Suad and an album by Jeremy Andrew.

When it comes to international singles, I want to highlight the new Kirty single, because it’s a) great b) it’s been a while since we’ve heard her solo material. There’s also new Drew Beskin, Pony Bradshaw, Sun June, Aaron Lee Tasjan, John Paul Keith and so forth.

That’s it for now. I’ll focus on the eoty lists now. I might or might not do this weekly round up next week. Depends on a) do I have the time b) are there enough new releases that it even makes sense to do it. I’ve collected the Christmas songs under own playlist called OCTA – Yuletunes 2020. So check that out, if you want some seasonal tunes. Love from a distance.

1. Kacy & Clayton and Marlon Williams – Last Burning Ember (Plastic Bouguet, New West Records, 2020)
2. Duff Thompson – Rock and Roll.. (Haywire, Mashed Potato Records, 2020)
3. Izaak Opatz – You Look Like I Need a Drink (Hot & Heavy-Handed, Mama Bird Recording Co, 2020)
4. Toby Goodshank – Tara (Death by Misadventure, 2020)
5. Zeb Zaitz – The Only Week I Know (Who Cares, Royal Oakie, 2020)
6. James Steinle – In Another Town (Cold German Mornings, 2020)
7. Desolation Horse – Everyone Was Incredible (Desolation Horse, American Standard Time Records, 2020)
8. Pony Bradshaw – Sawtoothed Jericho (single, Black Mountain Music, 2020)

TOP 30 Finnish Albums of the Year 2020

December 6, 2020 § Leave a comment

This is probably a good day to do this, so the year end routine continues with my favorite Finnish albums of this godforsaken year. Same deal as with the earlier favorite EPs post. First 20 in completely random order and then there’s top 10 in some sort of not-that-serious ranking. The numbers are arbitrary. Music is love not a competition. I think it’s just maybe helpful for the reader to have some sort of vague order, because not everyone is an music addict like me and have time or interest to listen 30 EPs or 100 albums and therefore might be interested in what were the ones that I loved the most. I hope I didn’t forget anything important. There’s a Spotify playlist at the bottom if you are into that sort of thing. I will however make a much larger playlist when I post the Finnish songs of the year closer to Christmas. That will include more albums, songs from best EPs and the finest singles.

Neiti Olga – Minä, aina (Luova Records)

Minä, aina by Neiti Olga

Ninni Forever Band – Uusi yhtye (Jukan Musiikki)

Jani Matti Juhani – Jani Matti Juhani laulaa Elvistä Suomeksi (Ainoa Productions)

Jerry Lindqvist feat Janne Hyöty – Waiting Out the Storm

Bizzarro & Jukka Nissinen – Taipale Broadcast (Vol1) (Humu Records / Hillotehdas)

Pöllöt – Taas vähään aikaan (Svart Records)

Sam Shingler – Strange Security (Soit Se Silti)

Maustetytöt – Eivät enkelitkään ilman siipiä lennä (Is This Art)

Metsäheikki – Sammakko saunassa (Helmi Levyt)

Joni Ekman – Sinulle.. (Soit Se Silti)

Pintandwefall – Your Stories Baby (Soliti)

Your Stories Baby by Pintandwefall

Vasas flora och fauna – Möte med skogsgardisterna (Startracks)

Maybe this one could go to the international list as well, but I’ll keep them here forever.

Hermaja – Kultasuoni (Helmi Levyt)

Joku Iiris – Joku Iiris (Humu Records / Hillotehdas / Jukan musiikki)

Guggenheim-projektz – Dersu Uzala (Helmi Levyt)

Arppa – Laavalamppuja (Arppa Music)

Joose Keskitalo – Nukkekoti (Helmi Levyt)

Bad Sauna – Olen rikas sillä minulla on teidät (All That Plazz)

A real last minute entry, because it just came out on friday. I’m loving it so far. Might become a huge favorite and push for top 10, but it’s too early to tell. However, it’s already clear that it has to be on this list.

Olen rikas sillä minulla on teidät by BAD SAUNA

Lätsä – Lätsä (Helmi Levyt)

I would like to bend the rules of math a little bit and squeeze this one into the top 10.

Matti Jasu – Up and Running

Up and Running by Matti Jasu

10. Message Field – A Brief Visit to Skull (Soit Se Silti)

I little bit slept on the debut album and never learned to love it as much I would have liked. I may need a revisit, because I think I was the one at fault there. I love this new album.

A Brief Visit to Skull by Message Field

9. Robert Ensio Niemistö – Joilla on korvat se kuulkoon (Jukan Musiikki)

An excellent solo record from Robert Ensio Niemistö. This has been a bit of a slow burner for me. Not that there’s anything particularly difficult about it, but it took me a while to understand how great it is. He also released another record called Tincan Folklore. Plenty to love there as well.

"Jolla on korvat se kuulkoon" by Robert Ensio Niemistö

8. Veli – I Am Changing (Evil Veli Recordings)

Veli was a busy man and released this beauty of album and two EPs of home recordings. And all of them are pure gold.

I Am Changing by Veli

7. Rosita Luu – Samettisuu (Helmi Levyt)

Rosita Luu is getting better all the time. That trio of Kuollut monta kertaa, Suorat mutkiksi and Toista maata is just remarkable. Not that there’s anything wrong with the rest of this either. Such a great record.

6. The Sugarrush – High Status (Nature Suck Anyway Records)

My all-time favorite Finnish band The Sugarrush did some cupboard cleaning and released an album they recorded a decade ago. High Status is a damn fine pop album and I’m thrilled that this beauty is finally out and available.

5. Puhelinseksi – Sydänkohtaus tanssilattialla (Svart Records)

I think this is the Finnish album that I’ve listened the most during this year. It’s a fabulous punk rock power pop blast and a much needed energy boost, if the world tries to keep me down with vicious curve balls. And damn there’s been a few of those directed my way in 2020. I’ve needed this record badly and it has delivered each time.

Sydänkohtaus tanssilattialla by Puhelinseksi

4. Kalevi Suopursu – Yksin yksiössä (Helmi Levyt / Jukan Musiikki)

I wanted a record like this since I once saw Kalevi Suopursu karaokeshow and loved every second of it. Sweet that it’s here now. I love the whole thing, but got really addicted to the song Minä olen sinun sunnuntai.

3. Nightbird – Travelin’ Baby (Ella Ruth Institutet)

This album just entered into the world a couple of weeks ago, but it already found its way into my heart. A really beautiful folk/blues album from singer-songwriter Nightbird aka Anna-Stina Jungerstam.

Travelin' Baby by Nightbird

2. Amuri – Amuri (Helmi Levyt)

This one was a year of the Suopursu for me. Kinda loved every project he was involved in. Highlight being this debut album from Amuri. The opening song Halla was my song of the year 2019, so the expectations were extremely high. Perhaps nothing else is as brilliant as Halla, but there’s so much to love and cherish. Kalevi Suopursu and Mikko Siltanen are both so great in this songwriting thing and what an awesome band too.

1. Laura Moisio – Laulaa kun ei voi muutakaan (Texicalli)

And the Finnish album of the year is Laulaa kun ei voi muutakaan by Laura Moisio. This one challenges my music taste maybe a bit more than the previous picks, but damn how it also cuts the deepest. Kaukana onnesta is by far my favorite Finnish song of the year and Kehä don’t fall far behind. A tremendous album and I love it so so much.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #116

December 5, 2020 § Leave a comment

Another week, another new music weekly.

A year is coming to an end and the release schedule is not that crowded anymore. I’m also focusing on the year end list and might miss stuff. I will do this at least next week though, because there’s some most likely great ones still on the way. Duff Thompson, Desolation Horse, Kacy & Clayton and Marlon Williams and so forth.

Let’s start this week from the Finnish ones, because they didn’t get the memo that one should mostly release holiday tunes at this time of the year. There’s a candidate for the song of the year list from Kielo Kärkkäinen (first single from her next album) and the album of the year list from Bad Sauna. We also have great new singles from Pekka Laine, Tomi Nordlund & Syvä Joki, Matti, Vino Puu and Pelko. Plus revisit to the wonderful Nightbird album from the past week.

My favorite international album/release is the new Gladie EP. I’ve listened No Call List a few dozen times since yesterday. There’s also an album from Winston C.W. and EP from Matthew Ryan. I’m sure there had to be a few more. Langhorne Slim did release side A of Strawberry Mansion. Christo Graham album is a November release that I stumbled upon during Bandcamp day. First time on this list.

Update a few hours later: Just saw that Jeff Loops released an album. I added a song from it to the playlist as well.

As for international singles. A big one are the final Neal Casal singles. A new Esther Rose song is always exciting. Desolation Horse, Three Sacred Souls, LadyCouch and Pony Bradshaw also continue to impress. Oh yeah and Carla Geneve released a new band version of a song that I love oh so much. Everything else would of course be worth a mention, but you’ll find from the list below. And as mentioned last week, the Christmas song are on a separate playlist. You’ll find it from my Spotify profile or check the direct link from last week’s post.

That’s it for this week. First end of the year list is now on the blog too. More to come during the next couple of weeks. Love from a distance.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #115

November 29, 2020 § Leave a comment

Another week, another new music weekly.

A super slow release week due to thanksgiving week I presume. Plus we are approaching Christmas and AOTY time, so release schedule starts to slow down in general too. Anyway, therefore there’s a bit more reappearances from the past week than normally.

I’ll start with the Finnish ones this week, because there’s a really important one from Fenno-Swedish songwriter Nightbird. A pretty world class stuff, if you ask me. So if you didn’t get enough new American folk and blues albums this week, give a spin to Travelin’ Baby. It’s a treasure. Other Finnish beauties on the list and my radar this week are an album from Hot Heros feat Iro Haarla, EP from Tiiu Helinä and singles from J.Kajan, Markus Perttula, Sepikka and Joni Ekman. The playlist also includes Jere Valkonen album from a week ago and revisits Antero Kaksikäsi single from the past week.

Not a whole lot on the international albums and EPs front, but a few beauties for sure. A new album from folk singer-songwriter Richard Allen was a lovely surprise. I loved his In the Front Room album in 2014 and this new one sounds gorgeous on quick listen. I can’t wait to give a more thorough spin soon. Probably all songs from Grace Gillespie’s new EP have been on this playlist during the past year. That is now out too. We also have a surprise album from Scott H. Biram, Max Bien Kahn’s stay at home demos plus Emily Barker has a new EP with three versions of Machine. Nick Dittmeier released an extended version of his 2019 EP. I also included wino-strut & friends. I mentioned it on the release week a few weeks back, but it wasn’t on Spotify back then. It is now, so I included it on the playlist this time. Luluc album came out in October, but I missed that at the time completely.

And finally the international singles. There’s a new one from long time favorite Matt Paxton. That matters every time. Never heard of Clara Mann before today, but her single destroyed me in a good way. Amazing song and can’t wait to hear more songs. Desolation Horse is another new one that hit a home run. There’s an album coming out in December on American Standard Time. Little Mazarn, Vilma Flood and Aaron Lee Tasjan released great new songs. Jacob Faurholt covered Sparklehorse and if you are looking for first class pop songs, check out the new track from The Boys of Perpetual Nervousness. As usual, everything is worthy of a namedrop, but you’ll find them from the list below. Oh yeah and there’s already been a ton of gorgeous Christmas singles and albums. I don’t want to put them on the weekly playlist so early on and therefore I made another playlist for the yuletunes. Otherwise I’ll forget them before I even want to listen to them. If you are already on the festive mood, you’ll find that playlist here.

I think that it is for this week. Thank you again for following this little blog. It matters. You matter. Love from a distance.

1. Nightbird – Good One (Travelin’ Baby, Ella Ruth Institutet, 2020)
2. Richard Allen – All he Decisions (Locust Tree Lane, 2020)
3. Grace Gillespie – Song for Nick Drake (After the Harvest Moon EP, Kaleidoscope, 2020)
4. Matt Paxton – Dance Me Home (single, 2020)
5. Clara Mann – I Didn’t Know You Were Leaving Today (single, Sad Club Records, 2020)

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #114

November 22, 2020 § Leave a comment

Another week, another new music weekly.

This one was a giant release week, because some of my absolute favorite songwriters released new albums. I’m referring to J.E. Sunde and John Calvin Abney. I’ve loved their songs for a long time and the new albums are wonderful. Actually I’ve loved the music of Adam Selzer even longer and I was thrilled to see he released a solo record. If you are a really long time reader of this little music blog, you might remember his old a band called Norfolk & Western. I loved them back in the early 00s and Dusk In Cold Parlours is one of my all-time favorite albums. Give that one listen, if you are not familiar with it. That last song still stops time. A perfect album. Anyway, back to 2020 and the new solo album which also sounds great. I look forward to diving into it more thoroughly once I’ve done with this weekly round up thing-y. Oh yeah and that The Parson Red Heads album I mentioned a week ago is now streaming here in Europe too, so it’s on the playlist this time around. Moving on from long time favorites to new favorites. These Kacey Johansing, Laura Fell and Badge Epogue Ensemble albums sound fabulous on quick listen. And that’s just to name a few. Here’s a list of all new album/EP releases that were on my radar this week.

J.E. Sunde – 9 songs About Love (Vietnam)
John Calvin Abney – Familiar Ground (Black Mesa Records)
Adam Selzer – Slow Decay (Jealous Butcher Records)
Kacey Johansing – No Better Time (Night Bloom Records)
Laura Fell – Safe From me (Balloon Machine)
The Parson Red Heads – Lifetime of Comedy (You Are The Cosmos / Fluff & Gravy Records)
Badge Epogue Ensemble – Self Help (Telephone Explosion Records)
Partner – Never Give Up (You’ve Changed Records)
Caitlin Harnett & The Pony Boys – Late Night Essentials -Nov 9th release, but first time here
Tim Bluhm – Hag Heaven (Blue Rose Music)
Kelsey Waldon -They’ll Never Keep Us Down EP (Oh Boy Records)
Elan Noon – Colour Story
I Am Oak – Odd Seeds Pt1 (Snowstar Records) -Full album in December
Brenna Lowrie – Loss Leader EP -Jun 23rd release, missed it at the time
Ryan Burns & The Local Ghosts – Static Year
Jack Name – Magic Touch (Mexican Summer)
Ward Davis – Black Cats and Crows
Josh King – The Shed, SpoonKing
Emily Edrosa – Another Wave Is Coming (Park The Van)
Weezy Ford – All At Once (Field Electric Recordings)
King Hannah – Tell Me Your Mind and I’ll Tell You Mine EP (City Slang)
Huttch – Quick Fix EP
Slight Of – Other People (Dadstache Records) -28th of Aug release, shared the single failed the album release.

And outside of the streaming services, we’ll have at least a new album from Freschard. That’s always something love and cherish.

Moving on to the Finnish stuff. The only album release is the new one from Jerry Lindqvist, but it’s a really good one. As an addition to that there’s a mighty good run of singles from Janne Laurila, Janne Tapion Sisäinen Avaruus, Antero Kaksikäsi, J.Kajan, Mauri Dark, Eerie Deer, Iisa, Ruissalo Amping, Radio Supernova. I was also ready to praise the new Nightbird album, because I thought it was a Friday release. However, it’s actually a 24th of November release, so you can check that out midweek if you want to hear a magnificent Finnish album.

Finally the international should-be hits aka singles. A couple of big album announcements from The Weather Station and Michael Feuerstack. If this blog and world still exists at the end of 2021, you’ll find those from my AOTY 2021 lists. Wonderful songs once again. Other personal favorites like Andy Shauf, Mariel Buckley, Aaron Frazer, Drew Beskin also have fabulous songs this week. Brian Johannesen released two amazing new songs. Duff Thompson is a new one for me, but I’m very fond of his new singles and look forward to hearing the album in December. As usual everything else would also be worthy of a mention, but you’ll find them all from the list below.

I think that is all for this week. Such a lovely week of new releases. Thank you songwriters for keeping me relative sane during these weird times. Love from a distance.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #113

November 16, 2020 § Leave a comment

Another week, another new music weekly.

Sorry for the small delay. I’ve been suffering with small flu symptoms for the past few days. Had a covid test too, which was negative. So just an ordinary one. At least this time around. I still suspect that I might have had it back in March, because I was sick for eight weeks with what was by far the weirdest sickness of my life. And even after the so-called “recovery”, I’ve felt like absolute horseshit all year long with freaky symptoms that come and go. Since mid-March my year has been a total nightmare with awful night sweats, chest pains, headaches, tachycardia and what not. There’s no way to tell what I really had in the spring, because you couldn’t get a test early on. But whatever the hell it was, I never fully recovered from it. That’s kind of why there has only been this weekly post on the blog and why I’ve been horrible at answering to your emails and messages. I just haven’t had enough energy to do much more than just trying get through each day. So sorry about the lack of updates and horrible correspondence. But enough with the personal mumbo jumbo. Here’s a very quick run of this week’s new releases.

I’ve spent most time this weekend with Terra Spencer’s beautiful new album. It has been the remedy for my flu-ish mind. Other big things this week for me are the new album from Trevor Beld Jimenez and the EPs from Gianna Lauren and Molly Parden. The week also gave us new great albums from Gwenifer Raymond, Spencer Cullum, The Flat Five, Wayne Graham, Charlie Kaplan, Chris Stapleton and Gillian Welch (rarities comp) plus EPs from Brittain Ashford & Matt Bauer and Lambchop. Oh yeah and there’s a new album from The Parson Red Heads at least in the US. I think there might be a later Euro release, because it’s not available on Spotify over here.

In Finland, we have more home recordings from Veli. What a sweet EP. There’s also new albums from Maustetytöt and KO:MI plus singles from Nightbird, Gim Kordon, EPILÄ and Johannes Faustus.

And finally international singles. There’s a new single from Teenage Fanclub. A kind of big deal for me, because The Posies, Teenage Fanclub and The Sugarrush are my all-time favorite bands. There’s also the final single from the John Calvin Abney album that’s due out next week, Lucero cover from Heather Valley, new beautiful ones from Pony Bradshaw, LadyCouch, Small Houses and so forth.

That’s it for this week. Back to bed. Love from a distance.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #112

November 8, 2020 § Leave a comment

Another week, another new music weekly.

A really slow release week probably because of the US election. Grateful that it turned out well and we can breathe a bit more easily after this result. Love speaks louder still like VanWyck sings on the Ballad of the Quiet Citizen. Of course following the election also took all my time and attention, so it’s a big possibility that I also missed some releases entirely. Anyway, here’s the short release round up and playlist of the week.

There’s new albums from Kristofer Åström, David James Allen, Andrew Collberg, Herman Dune, Donovan Woods and Honey Made. I also featured the Chris Acker album for the first time. I stumbled upon A Song Catcher’s video of Orion’s Gut a few weeks ago and been listening to it ever since and finally bought it on Friday on Bandcamp day. It came out early in the year, so I’m really late to this one. Thankfully music is relevant whenever it hits your heart. Sometimes it may seem like a life span of an album is like two weeks around the release date and new music blogs such as this might even contribute to this feeling. It’s load of rubbish though. It doesn’t matter if the music was released in 1935 or tomorrow, if it hits your soul today. That Normal Heights EP is also some weeks old. Here’s the full list of album/EP releases that were on my radar this week:

Chris Acker – Good Kid (March release, first time on the new music weekly and playlist)
Kristofer Åström – Hard Times (Startracks)
David James Allen – Radiations (Garment District Records)
Andrew Collberg – 1986 (Papercup Records)
Herman Dune – Notes from Vinegar Hill
Donovan Woods – Without People
Normal Heights – The Trees EP (OCT 20 release)
Honey Made – Brand New

Outside of the streaming world there’s bunch of good ones too.

Daniel Romano – White Flag (Another 2020 album from Daniel Romano. If I get lazy with the year-end lists, I can make a great top10 AOTY list just by using Daniel Romano albums.)
No. 1 Knife – Mr. Nickelsworth (Cafe Rooster Records) (New band by Brian Wright and Sally Jaye)
Matthew ‘Doc’ Dunn – Rain, Rain, Rain (OCT 26 release from Canadian cosmic cowboy, I just bought it myself)
Fred Thomas – Another Song About Riding the Bus (Selected Songs 2002-2020) (Antiquated Future Records) (This is the one that I meant to mention a week ago, a rarities comp from the great Fred Thomas)

The Finnish section is pretty small. Only revisiting the gorgeous Message Field album from the past week and adding the new Mauri Dark single to the playlist. Helmi Levyt also released a beautiful album by A O I D E, which is not yet on the streaming services.

And finally the international singles. The playlist starts with a protest song by Chris Pierce. I know him from War & Pierce, but this solo stuff is also very powerful. There’s an album coming out in 2021. Chris Velan’s first song in French sounds gorgeous even though I don’t have any idea what he is singing about. Black trans artist Apollo Flowerchild also released a wonderful single as did Terra Spencer, Adam Lee, Ordinary Elephant and Pickering Pick. I also featured Emma Swift’s fabulous song from the 19th of October. I missed it at the time, because even the thought of looking for her songs on Spotify didn’t occur to me, but looks like she has made an exception with a single. Oh and as for Spotify, what garbage news they again presented us this week with the lower promotional royalty rate. You need to pay more, not less. I’m starting to feel ashamed doing this weekly round up that revolves around a Spotify playlist.

That’s it for this week. Love from a distance.

1. Chris Pierce American Silence (single, Pierce Records, 2020)
2. Chris Acker – Orion’s Gut (Good Kid, 2020)
